It was before 7 pm on a Wednesday and while we were promised a dry day, it had not stopped raining! Mark and I were sitting going over the football rankings, ready for the next fuel drain to come in. Inevitably we received the phone call from a lovely woman on a business trip who had pulled into the Tesco petrol station in Fairstead and put the wrong fuel in her diesel metallic grey VW Eos hire car in error. The poor lady was rather agitated it seemed, saying "I simply can't believe that I have messed up the vehicle! I am so familiar with putting unleaded in my petrol vehicle I totally forgot that I was running a diesel!" We advised her to take it easy and not to worry, and that these things regrettably do happen. She was able to relocate the car into a safe area and, seeing that it was just a few miles off from our van, we could arrive at the woman quickly. The contaminated fuel was drained and she could go home to the motel she was lodging at. Despite the fact that we got extremely wet, it was all rewarding to watch her drive off calm and not so apprehensive. One more fuel drain in Norfolk done well in my books!

The 3 things you MUST know about Wrong Fuel!

AdBlue Contamination

Throughout Norfolk we are noticing progressively more cases of AdBlue contamination wherein a person has put AdBlue directly into their diesel fuel tank. This is to some extent due to motorists not understanding how to work with it (pay attention: it is in fact not a fuel additive), and to some extent simply because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually right adjacent to each other on the car.

Well, exactly what is the trouble with having AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

Seeing as AdBlue is predominantly deionised water, it is actually almost the same as pouring water in to your tank. Diesel and water don't mix whatsoever and attempting to run a diesel car on water isn't going to work. In addition, the urea is quite corrosive to your fuel system hoses and seals and is prone to crystalising, clogging injectors and fuel filters. If in case you put AdBlue into the fuel tank get it drained at the earliest opportunity. And definitely be careful not to turn over the car - not even to relocate it into a parking place. In the instance that you did start the vehicle you may probably need to have the full fuel system cleaned and fuel filters changed.

If you find yourself in this scenario do not fret or panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination service. Our engineers have got the specialised know-how and experience to get you back on your way swiftly and efficiently, no mess, no fuss.

Wrong Fuel Doctor Fairstead - Fuel Rescue Fairstead

This was certainly the night shift. It was around 3 in the morning and noone was stirring. It had become rather uneventful until now, and me and John were sitting around perusing several old articles. It was an uncommon restful time in Norfolk. Actually it was indeed that calm that the instant my mobile eventually rang I jumped! The motorist on the phone told me: "I have ended my evening shift and stupidly poured the wrong fuel in a white VW Fox in error". I asked him to let us know exactly where the car was located and we hit the road, ending up in Fairstead under an hour or so later. The wrong fuel was cleaned up and removed from the car. He thanked us for coming out so quickly. As we were returning home we saw two ladies on the side of the road who appeared to have a puncture. Accordingly we got out to help them change it, much to their elation.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
